For those unlucky enough to be affected by gluten intolerance eating the wrong food can have serious consequences ranging from osteoporosis to depression and with gluten found in everything from cereal to ketchup sufferers are forced to exclude many foodstuffs from their diet.
Baking their way to the rescue comes the award-winning Sussex company Kent & Fraser with their great tasting, handmade 100% gluten-free savoury and sweet biscuits and baked products.
“The gluten intolerants Tea Party is no longer an issue”, as Marie-Antoinette almost definitely never said, “Let them eat cake … or indeed anything from the Kent & Fraser range!”.
According to the St Leonards-on-Sea based Kent & Fraser,
“This pure and simple range has been lovingly developed from the kitchen table, combining the best quality ingredients (selectively sourced for their flavour) and sometimes ‘quirky’ combinations to produce some of the best tasting gluten-free cakes and biscuits in town”. A bold claim which I was keen to put to the test and thanks to the samples kindly sent by David Clark at Rock PR I was able to do just that.
Their range includes a Double Choc Chip Cake which scooped no less than 3 Stars at the Great Taste Awards 2009. However, my task was to sample the Lemon Butter Shortbreads (RRP £2.50) and the Stilton & Walnut Biscuits (RRP £2.65). After opening the well-designed packaging I was pleased to see that the biscuits were wrapped in individual packs of two, something that I’m fully in favour of.
First up the Lemon Butter Shortbread. I’m instantly pleased by a rather fresh tasting lemon flavour. The biscuits have quite a crumbly consistency, but considering they contain no gluten, eggs, soya or wheat I certainly didn’t feel like I was being palmed off with inferior baked goods.
Next up are the Stilton & Walnut biscuits which certainly live up to Kent & Fraser’s promise of delivering “‘quirky’ combinations”. Again the consistency is quite crumbly and the hit of Stilton is intense, ending with a pleasant walnut taste. Not my cup of tea (or tea accompaniment) if I’m honest, but having already bagged a double gold star taste award it’s clear that Kent & Fraser impresses many discerning palates.
The Kent & Fraser approach combines gastro aspirations with a passion for good food, creating an outstanding range of great tasting, hand-made and 100% gluten-free cakes, biscuits, cookies, and shortbread that are packed full of taste and deliciously that bit better for you.
